  • Mass Effect is a Sci-Fi classic.

I recently read an article in EW claiming that the Sci-Fi genre was out of ideas. Remakes, rip-offs, and sequels seem to be the general consensus in Hollywood. While I agree the genre could use a good boost, I refuse to believe that the genre was "an endangered species". Originality is out there, maybe the execs are looking in the wrong place?

Which brings me to Mass Effect, a game that has it's share of technical problems and gameplay annoyances, but has to be one of the most original and compelling pieces of science fiction in the last few years. Developer BioWare has created a universe filled with so much detail, it's easy to get lost. I found myself anxious to learn about each species of alien, and the conflicts they had been through. The story is filled with several twists and turns that actually surprised me. A rare feat in a genre with so much source material.

The narrative is extremely well written, which is complimented even more by the game's excellent voice acting. It's true. Conversations, not action or strategy, are the highlights of Mass Effect. With the help of the "dialog wheel" you'll be able to mold your adventure the way you please. Deciding to be a goody-too shoes or a complete bastard will result in much different responses. Instead of picking exactly what you'll say, the developers instead give you general suggestions to pick. This gameplay enhancement forces you to listen to your conversations. You'll believe in these characters, and will actually be interested to hear what they have to say.

So besides doing a lot of talking, Mass Effect also has one of the best Action/RPG battle systems yet. Combining the feeling of run and gun shooting, and selection based magic attacks, battles are fun and feel fresh. A better gambit system (FFXII) may have made a few custom-junkies a little happier, but would have also over complicated the situation. It turns out to be Mass Effect's second strong point, despite the game's overall low difficulty on Normal mode.

When it comes to low points, Mass Effect actually has quite a few. While the main quest is full of great locations, characters, and story. The sidequets are generally lacking in all of these things. Exploring the numerous galaxies seems impressive at first, but once you realize you'll be doing the same thing on every sidequest it's gets a little boring. You'll land on an empty planet, drive around in a tank, go to a base and kill everyone, and return to your ship. The planet's barren, the driving controls just manageable, and the bases consist of the same 4 blueprints. I guess in the future the settlers all live in similar houses? It's disappointing considering the amount of side quests present in the game. It made me wish for more main story missions (only about 4 or 5) to make up more of the play time (about 40 hours with everything, 15 without)

The game also has it's share of technical problems. Clipping, frame cuts, slowdown, glitches, all occur on a regular basis. It won't really ruin your time with the game, but it will make you wish they kept this one in the oven a little longer. In contrast, sound effects and music are top notch. Your house may shake when entering hyperspace, or when firing rockets from your tank.

It really is hard to come down on Mass Effect in the long run. Sure, it's got it's problems, but the experience is so rewarding you'll look past most of it. Luckily, the game has sold really well and a trilogy has already been talked about. It's a good thing, with the amount of hard work Bioware has done to create this galaxy, it would be a shame for it not to reach it's full potential. Here's to hoping the sequel fixes the minor issues. As of now, Mass Effect is truly the best RPG to come out this generation, and one that science fiction fans should not miss. Hollywood should take note.

FRESH: 94 94% U2 3D - Do you really love U2 that much to see them on Imax in 3D? U2 have released several live concerts, all of them from better albums. I don't think you need to hear beautiful day live to remember why you stopped listening to this band in the late eighties. If you didn't stop. well... have fun I guess.
FRESH: 67 67% How She Move - In the future all movie titles will be in slang. Can't wait for the Gone wit Wind remake
    ROTTEN: 31 31% Rambo - WHO CARES
ROTTEN: 13 13% Untraceable - The internet is out to get you!!! Run away from the keyboard with the candy!!
unrated Meet the Spartans - I'm a sucker for slapstick films like Airplane! and Naked Gun, but these recent pop-culture comedies are as stale as the subject they lampoon. Watch The Soup instead.

VideoGame Industry Makes MAD MONEY. (Thanks to Nintendo)

The new NPD numbers are in and they are insane. This year the videogame industry scored approx. 18 Billion in revenue in the US alone. While all the console makers had a decent holiday, Nintendo stood out with the top selling consoles of the year. Over 52% of the total market. Impressive considering the Wii was almost impossible to find throughout the entire year. In a way Nintendo blew a huge oppertunity to make even more money, but they can't be too upset. Hardware and software numbers below (taken from GAMELIFE).

    Bionic Commando Remake announced!

It's a good week when one of your favorite NES games of all time gets remade for next-gen consoles. This has quickly become one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Still need convincing? Check out the trailer below..

    Smash Bros. Delayed...AGAIN

It seems Nintendo fans will have to wait a little bit longer to play Smash Brothers. The new release date is March 9th (A sunday?). Thankfully, there have been more then a few positive Smash announcements this week to help heal the burn. For one, Japanese review mag Famitsu has rated Smash a perfect 40/40. A rare feat indeed. The samsh bros blog also revealed a ton of good updates this week. Including the return of Sheik (an old favorite), a new character (Captin Olimar from Pikmin) and the inclusion of stat upgrades, introducing Smash to RPG elements. The wait just seems to get harder with each update.

FRESH: 76 76% Cloverfield - HYPE HYPE HYPE. Could this movie have more hype around it? Basically it's the Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla. Surely to cause motion sickness to a majority of it's audience. Still, I want to see it just as much as the next fanboy.

ROTTEN: 39 39% 27 Dresses  - The first chick flick that comes out this week is 27 Dresses, a romantic comedy about never getting married. Sounds fantastic.

ROTTEN: 19 19% Mad Money - The second chick flick that opens this week is Mad Money. This one stars Queen Latifah. Sounds fantstic.

If you ask me....I think everyone should just go see:
    90%
     - it opens in wide release this weekend, and has been nominated for pretty much every award in the book. Any film that gets compared to Citizen Kane should be taken seriously. Not to mention Mr. Day-Lewis in his best role yet.

Darth Vader and Yoda announced for Soul Caliber IV

Not sure how I feel about Star Wars characters being entered into a medieval fighting tournament. Last I checked my Star Wars geek book, I believe LightSabers can cut through steel. That doesn't give the other fighters much of a chance now does it? Also notable: the PS3 version will have Vader, while the 360 version will have Yoda. Adding another layer of fuel to the console war fire. At first I thought Vader would be the "cooler" character, but if you can flip around like a bunny on crack with Yoda count me in.

Blu-Ray pretty much wins the next format war.

Blu-Ray scored big this week with the announcement of Warner as well as a few other markets going to Blu Ray exclusive. What makes things worse, previous HD-DVD only studios will not be renewing their contract. This is very good news for Sony, who looks to gain a lot more PS3 sales due to this. Even Microsoft mentioned this week that they would consider a add-on Blu-Ray player to their 360 if the consumer demand was strong enough.

    Wii-Fit sells a million in a month.

It's pretty amazing that a non-game like Wii-Fit can sell a million copies within one month in Japan, and the best Nintendo game in a decade (Super Mario Galaxy) has only reached 800k in almost 3 months. It's just further proof of the decline of "core" gamers in Japan. It will be interesting to see if the Wii-Fit craze is as popular in the US when it releases in March this year.

  • Best and Worst Records of 07

Another year over, and what a year it was. Without going into too much. Here is my list for the best records of 07. (PS - I apologize for all the spacing errors, the blog is acting wonky today.)

    25. The Shins – Wincing The Night Away
Maybe the most anticipated and disappointing record of the year. Partly because The Shins rarely put out records, and when they do they are over before they start. Wincing the Night Away has a ton of great tracks, but it still feels like too little too late. Get off your lazy asses and make another record soon.

    24. New Pornographers – Challengers
The most adult record the Pornos have ever recorded, results in their most average. A handful of tracks show the gang still have it.

    23. Go Team – Proof of Youth
Few can make noise rock listenable, but The Go Team have somehow figured it out.

    22. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
Neon Bible’s biggest fault is that it’s not anything comparable to their debut masterpiece, Funeral. Once you get over this, you’ll still find a lot to love.

    21. Deerhoof – Friend Opportunity
I love you Deerhoof, but I kind of want the electronics back. Please become a four-piece again!! A good album that followed several great ones, I’m sure they will do better next time.

    20. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver
Easily the most overrated album of the year. “Silver” isn’t THAT good guys. Still, it’s quick wit and dance beat make it one of the most memorable

    19. Jose Gonzalez – In Our Nature
On his first record, Jose Gonzalez wanted to be Nick Drake. He’s since realized his dream is pointless, and has set his sites for James Taylor. A quiet and well written folk record

    18. Explosions in The Sky – All The Sudden I Miss Everyone.
You have to give this band credit, with the amount of endless touring, and material released. It’s amazing that they are still at the top of the post-rock class. While other post-rock bands seem to be hit and miss, Explosions continues it’s flawless track record of instrumental bliss.

    17. Track a Tiger – We Moved Like Ghosts.
This one is way below the radar. It’s one of those albums that just showed up on my doorstep (desktop) on accident. Thank goodness, because this Yo La Tengo sound-a-like has much more to offer then what’s originally perceived

    16. Andrew Bird – Armchair Apocrypha
I don’t think there is a better indie singer-songwriter then Andrew Bird. It’s unfortunate that Armchair is lacking the substance of his previous works. Still a great album, by an always interesting artist.

    15. The Pony's – Turn The Lights Out
This Chicago post punk band has finally broken out to make an excellent record that many have ignored. It may not be revolutionary, but it will surprise you.

    14. Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Gax5 isn’t a bad record by any means, but it’s still just another Spoon record. This isn’t a problem if you’ve never heard a Spoon; it may be in your top 10. Here’s hoping the next LP has the band focusing toward new territory. Still some of the most fun you’ll have listening to music this year.

    13. Devendra Banhart – Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
Banhart can’t get any weirder can he? Canyon is a great record spread a little thin by its own ambitions.

    12. Yeasayer – All Hour Cymbals

Sneaking in at the end of the year, All Hour Cymbals' experiments in tribal psych-rock can bring out anyone’s internal hippie.

    11. Apostle of Hustle – National Anthem of Nowhere
Fans of the Broken Social Scene should take a second to listen to one of their best spin-offs of the year, in a sea of many average ones.

    10. Nina Nastasia & Jim White – You Follow Me

While everyone else was slobbering over Feist, I sat and listened to this little gem. The combination of Nina’s simple voice, but spiteful lyrics, and Jim White’s improvisational drums is a match made in folk rock heaven. One of the lost albums of the year, don’t miss it.

    9. Dinosaur Jr. – Beyond

Something has to be said for the reunion album of the year. Mascis returns and shreds that guitar just as nasty as ever.

    8. Blockhead - Uncle Tony's Coloring Book

The biggest surprise of the year for me. Throw this on at anytime, and a party will appear in your immediate vicinity. What makes “Coloring Book” different from other beat records is that it actually has substance. This one will be in rotation for years to come, not unlike DJ Shadow’s Entroducing

    7. Blitzen Trapper – Wild Mountain Nation

It’s hard to describe Blitzen Trapper without naming about every sub-genre out there. So I’ll make it easy. Do you like Pavement? Go for it.

    6. Field Music – Tones of Town

A Indie-Pop pleasure. In 28 minutes, Field Music cram in 11 tracks with more sound then most can perform in 80. Sharply written and performed, Field Music does not waste a second of your time.

    5. Iron and Wine – The Shepherd’s Dog

Once a lo-fi indie folk hero, Sam Beam has moved on to a more complete sound. What could have been a disaster to fans, turned out to be a positive evolution. There may be a lot more here then just a man and a guitar, but the extra instruments and improved production actually add more to the singer-songwriter’s personality then anyone thought possible. This dog is a winner from beginning to end.

    4. Menomena – Friend or Foe

Not everything on Friend or Foe works, but you can’t blame them for trying. From Indie-Pop to Post-Rock, Friend or Foe is one of the most varied and interesting listens of the year.

    3. Caribou - Andorra

Highly overlooked by a lot of critics for some reason, Caribou’s latest is also his best. A mixture of Brian Wilson harmonies and psychedelic electronics, Andorra was a force to be reckoned with. Pleasing existing fans, and creating many new ones.

    2. Wilco – Sky Blue Sky

While Wilco may have taken a break from their experimental side, Sky Blue Sky is still filled with absolute beauty. You won’t find a better album to sing along to on a Sunday Morning this year. Now about those VW ads…

    1. Radiohead – In Rainbows

I may have never taken the time to properly review In Rainbows like it deserved, but by now I’m sure most of you realize just how amazing this record is. Not only, was it’s “pay what you want” release the music story of the year, the album actually lived up to all the hype surrounding it. In Rainbows is Radiohead’s most personal and friendly album yet, and easily the best record they have released in ten years. Even with it’s slight lack of concept compared to past releases, Yorke and the gain pull the album together with excellent songwriting and beautiful melodies. This may have not been your favorite record of 07, but if it’s not in your top 10, you’re listening to the wrong albums.

    Worst albums
Modest Mouse – We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank.
Talk about a band that had it’s pulse on the indie scene and then totally lost it to commercial stardom. Modest Mouse are to Indie as Green Day is to Punk. The title says it all, at least they can admit it.

    White Stripes – Icky Thump
As someone who used to enjoy the striped down garage sound of The White Stripes, Icky Thump is an over saturated mess. White’s obsession with himself has become too apparent to enjoy the music.

    Voxtrot – S/T
How do you follow two great EPs that have been buzzed about for more then two years? Release an awful full length that sounds nothing like them. Really, is this the same band? What happened?

Honorable Mentions: (albums that are good, I just haven't spent enough time with)

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

    The National - Boxer

    Feist - The Reminder

    Best Soundtrack: I'm Not There

Best Re-issue: Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Here's to another great year in new music!!
