  • Weekend Movies - Not part of the Orange Box

Wow, thank goodness for Duke. He's picked up all my slack with all his game reviews lately. It much be nice to have so much free time. I think I only played like 3 games this year. Of course, with an Xbox under the tree I will have a lot of catching up to do in 2008. Expect Duke's Top Games of 07 Soon (right Duke?)

So there are quite a few movies coming out this week. Will any of them be able to stop the one-two punch of Omega Man: Will Smith and Abomination and the Chipmunks? Let's see.

  • Xbox 360 Review: Half Life 2 Episode One (Yet another part of the Orange Box)

     Half Life Episode One

Half Life 2 Episode One takes off right where Half Life 2 ends. When you start it up though, you’ll notice a bunch of visual differences.  Textures are sharper, colors are more defined and Alyx’s facial expressions are even more pronounced.  I won’t go into the plot details for those that haven’t played through Half Life 2, but the pacing is definitely different and it is WAY short.  I mean like 3 hours and that includes a mission where you have to retrace your steps three times.  The pacing also isn’t quite as strong, meaning there are quite a few “catch your breath” type moments which simply did not occur during HL2.  No new weapons are introduced and only one new enemy pops up.  It truly feels like a minor expansion pack and is (thus far) the weakest part of the Orange Box I’ve played.  (I have not played EP 2 or Team Fortress extensively yet).

That’s not to say it’s bad at all.  It’s wonderful to be able to finish HL2 and jump right into Episode one to keep the story driving along.  I guess the standard has been set so high that it’s disappointing that it simply maintains the excellence of the series rather than building on it.  The story is still riveting and I’m really developing an affinity for Alyx.  Her character is being fleshed out both physically and emotionally and I can only hope she becomes more of a focal point as the series develops.  Unfortunately, Freeman is a complete mute, so it is very nice to have a likeable supporting character.  I’ll be diving into Episode 2 soon, so stay tuned.

7/10 (Very short and lots of backtracking toward the end of the episode.)

    Mahalo,

    Duke

  • Xbox 360 Review: The Simpsons Game

     The Simpsons

It sure is frustrating reviewing The Simpsons Game.  On one hand, it’s fatally flawed camera and repetitive game play should make it easy to write off as a pass.  But on the other hand, when the Simpsons Game works, it works really well.  The humor is top notch, all the original voice cast is on board and it’s genuinely fun to explore Springfield.  Graphically it’s like the cartoon come to life during most of the game, and some cut scenes are movie quality.  Other cuts scenes lack polish and look like they’re from a completely different game.

The game begins with you taking control of the Simpsons family as they’ve just found an instruction booklet discarded on the ground describing the game which they’re in.  Turns out God is a big Simpsons Game fan and misplaced it during a play session.  You are tasked with going through many different mission based on classic episodes in a typical platforming style.  Throughout the game, you’ll play through Metal Gear, Madden, Sonic, God of War, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, Space Invaders and many other video game spoofs.  Matt Groening and Will Wright have hilarious cameos.  The game is just chalk full of self referential humor, including the unlocking of Video Game Clichés (as announced by the Comic Book Guy) and fighting your way through the EA factory among other things.  The game is most certainly worth playing through (or just watching someone play) just to hear the thousands of lines of dialogue and hilarious cut scenes.

Where the story and humor excel, the game play….well doesn’t excel.  It’s mostly a typical platform game with a broken camera.  There are two attack buttons, one for normal attack and one for special attack and hitting a bumper will change into your character’s alter ego.  The game requires you to use everyone’s different special powers to get past certain levels, but the puzzles are either way too easy or just plain guessing games.  The fighting aspects of the game get repetitive quickly and camera almost always gets in the way.  But it rarely causes more than inconvenience as the game is pretty easy to breeze through.

Overall, The Simpsons Game is a mixed bag that will appeal to fans of the show.  It’s hilarious from beginning to end, and just as the game play gets so monotonous that you want to pull your hair out, it throws a new hilarious episode at you that will keep you laughing until you want to destroy the camera and repeat the process all over again.

6.5/10 (Fix the Camera and it goes up a point, make the battles more interesting and you’ve got another)

  • Xbox 360 review: Half Life 2 (Another Part of the Orange Box)

     Half Life 2

How’s this for a timely review?  Sure Half Life 2 came out the same year as Halo 2, but many gamers (myself included) haven’t played this game yet, either because our PCs are glorified graphing calculators or we didn’t pick it up on the Xbox since we were too busy spewing homophobic slurs at prepubescent children during our Halo 2 death matches.  Well, the gaming gods have given us all reprieve and it’s glorious.

I’ll start off with the issues I had with the game:  Without playing the original Half Life, I felt a bit lost throughout the story.  It’s certainly well acted and fleshed out, but a lot of the in jokes and references to Black Mesa are completely lost on people not familiar with the back story.  The graphics are a bit dated, but that’s to be expected for a three year old game.  My only other issue is that I really wish I would have played this game when it came out to truly appreciate its numerous innovations.

Now that the requisite whining is done with, allow me to lavish an uncomfortable amount of praise on HL2.  This game is loaded with fantastic elements, from the voice acting, sheer amount of dialogue, enthralling story (even if non Half Life vets may lose of the oomph) well balanced difficulty and weapons, perfect pacing and huge variety of environments.  Simply put, the game will suck you in and won’t let go until the haunting ending echoes through your speakers.

Spoiler light plot synopsis:  You are Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist and huge player in the Black Mesa Incident (Dimensional rifts that bring Aliens to Earth, the focus of the original Half Life) who lives in a world that has been ravaged by aliens.  Teleportation technology is still being tested and Freeman is tasked with pretty much saving the world.  The storyline, while a bit confusing to those who didn’t play the first one or read the Wikipedia articles on Half Life 1, is well executed and includes several genuinely frightening moments.

The FPS controls are well defined and easy to pick up and master after a short period of time.  The difficulty seems to be an issue at the beginning of the game, but as soon as you acquire a few automatic weapons, the difficulty balances out and provides a healthy challenge while remaining fun.  One aspect of the game that stands out immediately is the amount of thinking you are forced to do in order to proceed.  It’s not just a simple linear quest; you are forced to use the environment in a variety of ways to proceed through the levels.  Then, just as you’re getting used to the feel of the weapons and the pace of the game, it throws a very lengthy and hugely fun vehicle level at you.  These vehicle levels are spread throughout the game and are absolute joys to play.  It’s not simply driving and shooting, often you have to get out of the vehicle to figure out how to raise a gate or find an alternate route.

The weapons are mostly standard fare, a mix of pistol, machine guns, rifles and rocket launchers which we’ve all seen many times before.  However, Half Life 2 introduces the most bad ass weapon of all time: The Gravity Gun.  There is no more enjoyable feeling than grabbing an enormous saw blade from across the room and using it to slice an entire row of zombies at once.  Once you acquire the Gravity gun, the environment becomes the most important weapon in your arsenal.  It never runs out of ammo and there’s never a shortage of things to shoot, topple or reflect back at the enemies.  Truly a brilliant weapon.

Half Life 2 is just another reason to pick up The Orange Box.  You can’t be disappointed with that purchase.

9.5/10 (An Overview of Half Life’s story would be nice to help those of us not familiar with the back story)

    Mahalo,

    Duke

  • Lazy Review Wrap Ups

Or How I justify my Gamefly account.

     Gamefly

Let me take a minute to tell you how awesome Gamefly has become for me.  I originally signed up with the service about a year ago (Just after I got my 360) and wasn’t all that impressed.  Sure it was nice getting games, playing through them and getting new ones, it just sucked that it took 7-10 full days from the day I returned a game until I got a new one.  Now that the new Tampa center has opened, I’m finding my turn around time is three times better.  Now it’s never more than 4 days before I’m playing the next available game on my queue.  I highly recommend this service to anyone with a new console (They Rent 360, Wii, PS3, DS, PSP, PS2 and even original Xbox, Gamecube, and GBA); it’s just so much easier to pay $20 a month for two games out at a time than it is to drop $60 on every awesome game that comes out.  Plus their Keep It option is easy and beats every used game store’s price, usually by about $10.  Throw in the coupons and discounts and you’ll become one happy gamer.  But if you’re going to sign up, can you do me a big favor?  Click this link when you sign up.  Daddy needs a new DS Lite and Gamefly will give anyone a shiny new DS Lite with just 5 friend referrals.  Now that this totally unpaid advertisement is over, let’s run through some of the smaller or lesser known titles I’ve been tearing through in the last few months.

    Wii Play (Nintendo Wii)

     Wii Play

It’s a game play collection that is even shallower than Wii Sports.  It’s fantastic for non-gamers to get used to the controls, but anyone who’s played the system more than a few times will find almost every game boring.  There’s a shooting game loosely based on Duck Hunt (although you rarely shoot at ducks), Find Mii which is based on Where’s Waldo, Pose Mii where you just rotate the controller to match the onscreen Mii, Charge a simplistic Cart Racing sim where you ride cows, Fishing where you….fish, Table tennis where you move the remote left and right to return the ball, Laser Hockey which is a really pretty air hockey sim, Billiards which is a pretty good sim of a 9-Ball game, and finally Tanks! which is like the old Atari game Combat.  Tanks! is worth the price of admission alone (it’s 49.99 and comes with an extra Wii Remote) and is truly fun with two players.  Billiards and Laser Hockey both have their bright spots and are genuinely fun with two players, but all of the other games are not worth playing more than a couple times.  For a game that’s practically a Tech demo, the controls are surprisingly wonky, especially in Laser Hockey and Billiards.  It’s very hard to put extra speed on the puck in Laser Hockey without knocking the puck back in your net or sending it in some unintended direction and Billiards often doesn’t register your shot the first couple times you set it up.  If you need another remote, you might as well pick up Wii Play for Tanks! Laser Hockey and Billiards, along with having a second non Wii sports game to play at parties with friends who aren’t too into gaming, but don’t go out and pick this game up on its own.  It’s just not worth it.

    4/10

    Viva Piñata Party Animals

     Viva Pinata Party Animals

My girlfriend is kind of picky when it comes to the games she is willing to play.  Most of the time she’s into Oblivion, an Action-RPG like Baldur’s Gate or a mini game collection with the occasional Animal Crossing or Viva Piñata thrown in.  This means I also play a ton of Action-RPGs and Mini game collections and consider myself a bit of an expert of the genres.  When I saw that Microsoft put out a Viva Piñata mini-game collection, I knew I’d be spending some time with this game.  Turns out it didn’t last too long because it’s just not a very good effort.  There is a typical collection of mini-games which most players have played through 10 times over with a cart race level thrown in for good measure every now and then.  This game is strictly for children who are enormous fans of the cartoon as even my very forgiving girlfriend tired of the characters voices and repetitive game play after only a couple hours.  There are far better mini game collections out there, so avoid VP Party Animals.  (Although if they come out with a mini game collection where I can play as Dick Cheney, Al Gore and Dan Quayle, I’m so down)

    3/10

    The Bigs

     The Bigs

I’m not a baseball fan, and I’m not a fan of baseball games either.  I am a fan of these over the top NBA JAM, NFL Blitz, NFL Street type games, so I decided to give The Bigs a spin.  It’s a very arcadey baseball game where the emphasis is on over the top home runs, 120 MPH fast balls and ludicrously acrobatic fielding.  Turbo meters, an emphasis on the big plays, over the top presentations and a couple button pressing mini-games keep the game moving at a fast and exciting pace.  The Rookie Challenge lets you create a player, throw him on a team and compete in a variety of different game scenarios to make it through the season.  You’ll be playing some standard games as well as having goals like 3 HRs in one game or 2 Stolen bases, adding variety to the standard 5 inning game.  Then there’s the option of stealing players from any team you beat, so it’s easy to assemble your own All star team on your way to a World Series.  Unfortunately for hardcore fans, there is no franchise mode or season mode, so after you’ve won the Series, it’s time to start it up again.  Not much replay value unless you’re chasing achievements, and even then after two rookies are leveled up, you’re done.  There is also a Home Run derby and quick play option, but my favorite aspect of this game is the Home Run Pinball.  In this game, you choose your hitter and stand in the middle of Times Square in New York.  A pitcher throws you balls and your goal is to hit neon signs, taxi cabs, lights, billboards and other things to rack up points.  This is easily the most addicting portion of the game and adds quite a bit of replay value.  If you’re a baseball fan or a fan of extreme sports titles, this game is worth picking up if the price is right, but for everyone else it’s probably not worth a rental for Home Run Pinball alone.

    6/10

    Portal

Xbox 360 Review: Portal (A small part of The Orange Box)

    Dear Portal,

Let me just get right to the point.  Will you marry me?  I know I’ve only known you for like 2 or 2 ½ hours, but I know that I love you so much that I’ll never get tired of you.  You are easily the most innovative game of the year.  You’re extremely funny, and you only get funnier the more I know you.  Your game play is easy to pick up and play and easy to understand, you just shoot a blue portal in one place, then an orange portal in a different place. Then when you walk through one portal, you walk out the other one.  It doesn’t get much simpler than that, but you still make it so fresh, introducing all sorts of new twists as you play.  My only issue with you is I wish you were a little longer.  And that’s only because I crave more of you to love.  So let’s get married, have a baby and we’ll watch it grow into the greatest game of all time.

    Love,

    Every Gamer

9/10 (Would have been a 10/10 if it was longer)

Newgrounds has a pretty awesome 2d version of Portal available for free HERE (Opens in a new window)

  • Movie Review: No Country For Old Men

     NCFOM poster

The Coen Brothers’ latest film is based on a book by Cormac McCarthy (Author of The Road, The Border Trilogy and other modern works of literary genius).  That line enough should force all of you who haven’t seen it yet to run out, immediately, and plunk down your cash to check out this masterpiece (and pick up a couple of Cormac’s fantastic novels while you’re at it).

A quick, spoiler light synopsis:  A hunter comes across a grizzly scene in the desert; a few trucks are surrounded by a bunch of dead bodies riddled with bullets.  He decides to get a closer look and discovers an enormous amount of heroin and a suitcase filled with over two million dollars.  He grabs the suitcase and takes off, but the owner of the money wants it back, and that’s where the story really kicks in.

The premise might sound contrived, but it most certainly is not.  This film truly deserves to be called a masterpiece and is easily the best movie I’ve seen this year.  The Coen brothers’ greatest traits, like their scrupulous attention to character development and the intricacies of human interactions and emotions, and their amazing use of editing to create tension come across in spades.  There are easily three Oscar nominations from the actors alone, with Josh Brolin (Who plays Llewelyn Moss, the hunter who finds the cash) and Javier Bardem (who plays Anton Chigurh, the creepiest serial killer since Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer) putting together two of the finest performances in modern film.  Seriously, both of them should be taking home little gold statues this year and I’ll be shocked if they don’t.  Tommy Lee Jones puts in a fantastic turn and will most likely pull out a Supporting actor nod, but probably won’t win with how many other awards this movie is almost certain to pull.

One of the most interesting aspects of this movie is the complete lack of a soundtrack. There is absolutely no music in the film whatsoever and the audience sits in almost complete silence, save some wind or footsteps, for good portions of the movie.  This truly lends to the enthralling atmosphere of the film and keeps viewers on edge.

This could be the Coen Brother’s best movie so far and needs to be seen.  If you can’t catch it in the theaters, be sure to rent the DVD and give it 100% of your attention.  You won’t be disappointed.

10/10 As close as we’ll get to witnessing cinematic perfection this year.

    Mahalo,

    Duke
