So a few of us went to see Beowulf this past weekend, and were left pretty under whelmed. This is kind of sad considering we watched the film in IMAX 3D, which is almost always entertaining. Don't get me wrong, the 3D effects in this film are nothing short of amazing. Swords, arrows, spears, and dragons will be flying at your head at any given moment, which makes the action scenes extremely thrilling to watch and experience. Seeing the film in IMAX is the only way too see it. In fact, I don't think I'd ever want to watch it any other way.
The film itself is a completely different beast. It's hard to put my finger on what I disliked about Beowulf, maybe because there were a lot of reasons. The film basically feels like a paint-by-numbers Lord of The Rings knockoff. Just with characters you don't care about, and a rather boring story. Now I remember why I fell asleep reading this in English class. The film seems to overstay it's welcome for about 30 minutes. The digital actors were also a little hard to get used to, and it was a little awkward that they were naked, drunk, and horny on more then a few occasions. It just kind of creeps me out to see animated characters make sexual innuendos, which will be a hurdle until the animators can get these characters to look more life like. It really hurts the emotional appeal of these characters in general, they all feel a bit hollow.
I have to give credit to Zemeckis for making the first mainstream "adult" CG film. Despite the PG-13 rating, this movie feels like an R on many instances. It's a lot gorier then I imagined, which is always a plus. It's also the scariest CG film I've ever seen, and should sell tons of popcorn this fall. Is 3D CG the new entertainment medium? I don't think so, the 3D definitely adds to the experience, but it also proves that despite the visual thrill a bad movie is still a bad movie.
6/10 - the movie
9/10 - The IMAX 3D experience.
