Album of the Week 09/11/07

A little late this week, Lots of releases came out, including the awful overrated Strawberry Jam from Animal Collective. While hipsters swoon over a bunch of nonsense, I'll stick to my favorite pick this week.

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth

The Go Team return after a successful world tour and a critically acclaimed debut, so how did they do this time around? Proof of Youth shows the Go Team stretching their unique sound to it's limits. If you've never heard the Go Team think of them as a huge collage of 60s pop, 70s theme music, 80s roller-skating vocals, and 90s guitar noise. On first listen it could sound like a giant mess, and still may to some impatient ear drums. It's very easy to love or loathe the Go Team for their lo-fi cheerleading vocals and their obnoxiously loud horn section. Thankfully, the UK band takes time out on a few slower instrumental numbers that rival pretty much anything similar this year. Unlike their debut, there are fewer of these moments. Which is a bit disappointing considering the brevity of the album. A few tracks feel a little flat and too similar to their previous record, and guest stars like Chuck D do little to add to their overall sound. It makes me wonder just how long the honeymoon will last. For now most fans will not be disappointed, but haters will be less impressed
