  • Going to Europe: Site updates will be slim for a whille

Our Apartment in Paris.  Yes, you are jealous.

Hey everyone, just want to apologize for the lack of updates. I've been busy at work focusing on clearing my desk for my big Ireland-Amsterdam-Paris trip. Updates should remain slim until Mid-October. Raul Duke is also in the middle of moving, so he may not have time to update either.

This Week's Music Recommendations: Iron and Wine's The Shepherds Dog and Devendra Banhart's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon

Both records are excellent indie folk releases. Iron and Wine's strongest effort as well as the best folk album Ive heard all year, and it's Banharts most genre bending mind tease yet. Pick them both up.

    Radiohead LP7 info coming soon.

Radiohead have been updating their official site with strange symbols, of course the geeks at Ateaseweb have already cracked the code. According to them the above image says "MARCH WA X". The fans have already assumed that this a release date of some sort. March 10th is the current guess. Rumors that the band has finally signed to a label have also been floating around. Im sure we will find out soon enough.

Games: Halo 3 came out. In case you missed the Multi-Million Dollar Marketing Campaign. I guess it's good or something.

Zelda Phantom Hourglass releases next week

Good chance this will be the best DS title of the year. Just in time for that long ass plane ride too. Expect a review when I get back.

That's all for now. Be back in a few weeks.

  • Week in Geek 09/21/07 - TGS Edition

The TGS (Tokyo Gaming Show) was this week, and with it a slew of announcements. One of the biggest being

    The Return of Dual Shock

Sony controllers will finally rumble again. After already saying that rumble was "last-gen" and was "too difficult" for the PS3. It might have something to do with Sony fans, and Metal Gear creators whining about the lack of rumble in the joystick. Looks like Sony bit the bullet. Too bad it won't be available until Spring 2008. Sadly the much rumored 40 gig PS3 did not surface.

TONS of games announced......for cell phones?

Resident Evil 4, Megaman Legends, Parasite Eve 3, etc. When did cell phone gaming become such a money maker for game developers? You have to admit though, that RE4 cell phone game looks pretty sweet.

    The Japanese love Halo 3!

Famitsu, Japan's leading game mag, somehow scored the first world exclusive Halo 3 review. Which is a bit of a shock considering the Xbox sells less then the gameboy on a day to day basis. So what did they think. Halo 3 was scored a 9,9,10,9. Which is extremely high for the magazine. Add to the fact that the FPS genre is very unpopular in Japan and it looks like Microsoft has another hit on their hands. Surprised? I didn't think so.

  • Good News: Smash Bros is online! Bad News: Seems pretty limited.

Nintendo finally made constant fanboy speculation cease today, with the announcement of Wi-Fi Battles in Smash Bros. Brawl. While message board posters cried in joy, there were also tears of sadness within the details.

First off, it should come to no surprise, but still disappointment, that friend codes will be required to unlock the full features of the online mode. Rankings, basic text communications, and even players names! will be unavailable if you don't have someone's 12 digit code. While I sort of understand Nintendo's position, it still seems gamers are getting the bad end of the stick. Why not give us the choice?

The Wii already has system codes, why Nintendo demands that we exchange new codes for each game we purchase is beyond me. It's a waste of time. Lack of rankings and communication really disables any reason to go online in the first place, even the very first Nintendo Wi-Fi game (Mario Kart DS) had rankings and names for "non-friend" gamers. What does fighting a random player really add to the experience if you don't even know their name? Just a greater challenge over CPU opponents I assume.

It should be interesting to see how this works out. Even though the games creator seems to be a little nervous of lag with the following statement:

But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.

The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand.

This doesn't seem to re-assuring at all. On the brighter side the update mentioned "other modes" involving the WI-Fi connection. One can only hope for some sort of Co-Op mode.

Despite the drawbacks, having Nintendo's #1 (only) fighter online is BIG news. Sure it may pale in comparison to Xbox Live, but of course you aren't paying Nintendo anything for these services. Beggars can't be choosers, but we can still whine a whole bunch.

  • Album of the Week 09/11/07

A little late this week, Lots of releases came out, including the awful overrated Strawberry Jam from Animal Collective. While hipsters swoon over a bunch of nonsense, I'll stick to my favorite pick this week.

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth

The Go Team return after a successful world tour and a critically acclaimed debut, so how did they do this time around? Proof of Youth shows the Go Team stretching their unique sound to it's limits. If you've never heard the Go Team think of them as a huge collage of 60s pop, 70s theme music, 80s roller-skating vocals, and 90s guitar noise. On first listen it could sound like a giant mess, and still may to some impatient ear drums. It's very easy to love or loathe the Go Team for their lo-fi cheerleading vocals and their obnoxiously loud horn section. Thankfully, the UK band takes time out on a few slower instrumental numbers that rival pretty much anything similar this year. Unlike their debut, there are fewer of these moments. Which is a bit disappointing considering the brevity of the album. A few tracks feel a little flat and too similar to their previous record, and guest stars like Chuck D do little to add to their overall sound. It makes me wonder just how long the honeymoon will last. For now most fans will not be disappointed, but haters will be less impressed

  • With Metroid Prime 3, the Wii finally delivers on it's promise. Revolutionary controls

Let's face it, the Wii library has been little more then mini-games and lackluster releases since it came out. Sure, there were a few exceptions, and yes WiiSports is fun at parties, but the system really hasn't had anything resembling a "real" game since Zelda. So, when the release date of Prime 3 was FINALLY announced I was overjoyed. After, 21 hours with Prime 3, I can confirm it is the "hardcore" game Wii owners have been waiting for. Not only because it's a great game in general, but because the Wii controls finally add to the experience. Something that Wii has promised since the beginning.

So what's so great about the controls? The debate over FPS (first person shooter, for the casuals out there) controls on Wii has been a heated one. Mainly due to Red Steel's awful debut performance on the Wii. The launch FPS left a terrible taste in most gamers mouths, and several gamers started doubting Wii's ability to handle the genre in general. Luckily, these nerves are unjustified, as Retro Studios has sent a benchmark on how all FPS controls should work on Wii games.

Using Prime's "Advanced" aiming, you no longer have to constantly move your arm just to turn. What results is the movement accuracy of a joystick, and the aiming ability of a mouse. It makes for the best of both Dual Analog and Mouse/Keyboard and certainly adds to the experience. Aiming is sharp and precise requiring very little movement at all with practice. It took me around an hour to get adjusted to this new style of control, but by the end of the adventure it was completely second nature. Going back to the sticks or the keys seems a bit archaic at this point. Turning could still be a bit faster, but for the purposes of this game, it's not needed. A quick 180 button would have solved everything.

These aren't the only new motion control tricks. The game also features a new lasso item, that is extracted and retracted with the thrust of your nunchuck. While it may sound gimmicky at first, the mechanic is used in several battles, and will eventually become an extension of how you play. Throwing your arm out to rip battle armor off foes becomes as exciting as it is interactive, and adds another layer of fun to the combat. A few other tricks revolve motion activated switches and puzzles that feel a little more forced, but never too annoying. Finally, your morphball can now jump with a lift of the Wiimote. This makes morphball puzzles move much quicker and convenient. Sadly, it's not 100% accurate, but still works enough to warrant it a positive addition overall.

Controls may be amazing, but what about the game itself? Thankfully, Retro didn't screw that up either. Prime 3 is definitely the most "fun" of the series. A lot of that is due to the controls, but a huge part is the much needed upgrade in presentation. While the first two Prime games were mainly silent and lonely affairs. Prime 3 involves several NPC and Voice Acting. This isn't a huge deal to anyone that's owned a Playstation 2, but for a Nintendo title this is big news. Prime's pacing is also improved, with less frustrating backtracking, fewer items to collect, and easier areas to explore. Combat is improved as well, and is more fun and faster paced. The whole game feels a bit more action based compared to the past titles, but in no way does it abandon it's roots as an exploration shooter.

Once again, Retro shows true talent when it comes to art direction. Despite Prime 3 Gamecube+bloom lighting graphics, Retro has given us beautiful worlds to explore. Wither it be a planet filled with giant stone golems, an ancient city in the sky, or a ghostly spaceship. Retro knows how to create worlds you can get lost in. Similar to other Prime games, every room is different and holds it's own. Each area is filled with tons of environmental puzzles that fit right into the Prime universe, a couple may even have you stumped for a few minutes.

Boss design is still at the top of the class, both artistically and mechanically. On par with other Prime releases, the bosses become epic events to be anticipated as well as feared. The excellent music playing throughout the game just adds to the immersion. The only downside is longer load times, which won't bother you at first, but as you are running from room to room can't get a bit frustrating.

The biggest downside to Prime 3 is the difficulty. While bosses are epic, they aren't all that difficult on Normal mode. In fact I fully believe Normal mode should have been called beginner mode instead. Veteran mode (also available at the start) has a much closer difficulty to past Prime games, but still lacks in a few areas.

The main reason for this is the new "hyper" mode. Once you gain the ability to become "hyper" you will find yourself blowing past enemies with ease. The catch is that it zaps your health. This poses a problem in the first 1/3 of the game, when you haven't collected many energy tanks. Once you have, the game becomes MUCH easier. Which is disappointing considering you'll have more trouble on the First "big" boss then the last.

Items and suit upgrade are also much easier to find this time around. Getting 100% completion has never been simpler with new map upgrades found later in the game. Which may make some newer gamers happy but will have hardcore Prime fans itching for more challenge. Prime 3 is not an extremely easy game, but it is the least hardcore of the 3, which is a bit of a bummer. In comparison bosses, items, puzzles, and even combat have had much stronger moments in the other games in the series. Don't worry, Prime 3 still has plenty for fans to cheer about.

Wii may be the casual gamers console, but I don't think Prime 3 will be being played in retirement homes. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is the first "gamers'" game designed for the console from the ground up, and it truly succeeds at it. It's easily the best game available on the Wii, at this time, that doesn't involve mini-games. It is a definite recommendation to any gamer who owns the console for it's promise, to revolutionize the way we play videogames.

    1. 3:10 to Yuma $ 14.1 Million NEW
    2. Halloween $ 10 Million $ 44.2 Million
    3. Superbad $ 8 Million $ 103.7 Million
    4. Balls of Fury $ 5.7 Million $ 24.3 Million
    5. The Bourne Ultimatum $ 5.5 Million $ 210.1 Million
    6. Shoot 'Em Up $ 5.4 Million NEW
    7. Rush Hour 3 $ 5.3 Million $ 129.2 Million
    8. Mr. Bean's Holiday $ 3.4 Million $ 25.1 Million
    9. The Nanny Diaries $ 3.3 Million $ 21 Million
    10. Hairspray $ 1.9 Million $ 114.9 Million

The Box office took a giant dip in sales this week. Not even 3:10 to Yuma could break 15 million, which is pretty sad considering the positive word of mouth and A list actors involved. Halloween dropped like a rock, and Shoot'em Up failed to perform. (Hint: It might have to do with the silly title). The real winner this week is Superbad which has confirmed Seth Rogan and Judd Apatow as the new Zucker brothers/Farrlley brothers. Except they aren't brothers. strange. Anyway, those guys are totally rich now.

So, Shia LaBeouf (Indy Jr.?) let the cat, or in this case title, out of the bag at the MTV music awards. Do people that watch MTV these days really care about Indy? I guess Lucas thinks so. Enough snark, I'm not sure what to think of the title. It definitely has promise. Lets just hop this new Indy movie goes much better then The Phantom Menace. I really hope that short round isn't replaced by a CGI actor.

  • New Radiohead album all dressed up with no where to go.

According to Paste Magazine (who?) Johnny Greenwood has confirmed the 7th opus from Radiohead is all finished. Great news! Now the bad news, they are currently without a label. EMI's 6 record deal (aka winning lottery ticket) is up and over, which leaves the band unsigned. I know that the band are a bunch of musical geniuses, but you would think they could have sorted all this business stuff in the 4 years it took to make LP7. I guess bands like Radiohead need business managers too. So who will win Radiohead's heart? Details are mum, but I'm willing to bet there are PLENTY of deals on the table. Let the bidding war begin!!

Final Fantasy XIII using a "cross-platform" engine

It seems that Final Fantasy XIII will be using a new engine titled "The White Engine" that will make it possible to develop for multiple platforms. This doesn't confirm that FFXIII will be on Xbox, but it does seem like a good possibility. More good news for Microsoft, more bad news for Sony.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is awesome.

I'm very close to finishing the last installment in the Prime series, and should have a full review up next week. Rest assured, it's another Nintendo classic. Sales are rumored to be the best for the series yet.

    4. The Bourne Ultimatum $ 10.2 Million $ 200 Million

    8. Death Sentence $ 4.2 Million NEW
    9. War $ 3.6 Million $ 16.4 Million
    10. Stardust $ 3 Million $ 31 Million

Zombie scored a win this weekend with the Halloween remake, breaking the Labor Day weekend records. I still think this film could have done a much higher opening if it actually released in October. Superbad continued to make money, and Balls of Fury actually had a decent opening considering the poor reviews. The Bourne Ultimatum just passed the $200 Million mark, making it one of the new Hollywood franchises that is getting critical and mainstream acclaim. Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence was largely ignored, just like the studio's marketing team ignored it. Good job guys. Finally, Stardust looks to be the biggest flop of the summer, which does not bode well for fantasy based films. I blame Peter Jackson.
