Week in Geek 08/24/07 - Nintendo Domination Edition

Nintendo Wii is the #1 "next-gen" console in the world.

In only 8 months in release, Wii has been able to take over the world by storm. Officially becoming the #1 next-gen console in the world. Pair that with the amazing sales of the DS, and it's plain to see that Nintendo is back in charge. Not since the SNES/GB era has Nintendo been on top of the charts. It seems innovation does pay off, now where is my 3rd party support?

To put a few more nails in the competitions coffin, take a look at these US sales for he month of July. The Wii had it's strongest month since December, during the slowest time of the year. Even with a price drop the PS3 failed to sell more then even the 360. Pathetic. Microsoft has a lot of strong releases and a price drop going for it in the month of August. It will be interesting to see how it fairs in the coming months. Will it be able to top the Wii? Seems unlikely.

July Hardware Figures
Wii 425 k

Nintendo DS 405 k
PlayStation 2 222k
PlayStation Portable 214k
Xbox 360 170k
PlayStation 3 159k
Game Boy Advance 87k

Geek Boredom

Screw Domino mazes and card houses, game hacking is the new time waster. Just look at this new video hack of Super Mario World playing itself. It's truly made by some evil genius, or just someone with way too much time on their hands.

Thank god for the Wii60.   I'm wondering how many people in Sony's Games division are looking for new jobs.

Software figures were pretty interesting too.  Despite the fact that the 360 has a much smaller install base than the PS2, the latest NCAA football game still made it to Number 1 on the list for sales.  Pretty impressive.  Now it'll be interesting to see which version of Madden takes the top next month.

Lets all just keep our fingers crossed that the 3rd party Wii support is coming. It doesn't look so hot right now, seeing that there's not a single 3rd party game i'm looking forward to which is not named Zack and Wiki.

Oh and it's good that you put "next gen" in quotes.

RE4 Wii Edition has been selling very well for a wii-make. Nintendo definitely needs those big budget titles too.

Zack and Wiki looks like a must buy, but don't forget Manhunt 2. Which has gotten a ton of positive press for its gameplay, as well as negative press for it's over the top violence. It was just approved for a M rated release in October.

in other news, Ken Levine has officially stated that there are NO plans for a PS3 version of BioShock. Claiming to have a "exclusive deal" with Microsoft. Interesting.

I'd be willing to bet that Bioshock ends up on PS3 by next Christmas

It won't, and it shouldn't. I'm glad Sony is suffocating in their own smug atm.
