Wait..R.E.M to return to rock?

Has R.E.M. finally returned to rock? The buzz has been all over the net from a 5-day "Working Rehearsal" in Dublin featuring 11 new songs from the 15th R.E.M. studio release. Info from the event can be found at the remdublin blog. Impressions of the new tracks have been mostly positive, with several fans already declaring the return of R.E.M.. Will it really happen? Only time will tell, the album will be finished sometime this fall. In the meantime check out some footage from the event, featuring the new song "Living Well's The Best Revenge"

Please don't get my hopes up. Excluding compilations it has been 15 years since I truly loved a whole REM album. Returning to rock is not the same as returning to their southern roots...I will be interested to hear if Peter Buck can stop with the power chords and show off how talented he really is. These You Tube clips don't have me convinced, but I'll definitely look into it more.

And yes, Michael Stipe does resemble a baby swimming for money.

I just hope his pee pee is bigger.

I wouldn't get my hopes up either, but anything has to be better then their last record. Around the Sun was a complete bore. At least they will actually have a drummer (Ex-Ministry) this time around.  Let hope the lyrics aren't about his love affair with Mario Batali. "Leaving Batali is never easy, especially when you like you to hang out at U2 concerts"

I blocked Around the Sun out of my memory bank, the lame album art perfectly depicts whats inside...If only I could get the image of Michael and Mario dancing out of my head.

I think Michael just needs to ride tractors at Bill Berry's farm for a while. Maybe that would knock some country back into him.

It's been so long, I don't think Michael Stipe remembers how to ride tractors. It's not like riding a bike, despite popular belief. Hooplah I tell you. Hooplah.

No, but it might be like riding Mario Batali.

I was waiting for that Duke, what took you so long?

So I'm assuming you haven't listened to any of the early stuff yet? Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, etc.? There are even some really beautiful instrumental tracks that I think you would appreciate. REM definitely lost something when they went mainstream. Fame changed them, but they have been around alot longer than most of the bands who have not sold out...YET. REM may be overrated, but in my mind it is only to the people that think Losing My Religion and What's the Frequency Kenneth make them a great band.

Don't get too mad at Duke, he's just too young to understand. I don't think he owns a record that was released before 1993. (Hint: That's when Siamese Dream came out)

I heard this guy Tom Waits is overrated too, but I think Duke likes him, so...

Hmm, my flaming skills seem to be diminishing. Two responses and neither were very angry. I'll try harder next time.
