  • Wait..R.E.M to return to rock?

Has R.E.M. finally returned to rock? The buzz has been all over the net from a 5-day "Working Rehearsal" in Dublin featuring 11 new songs from the 15th R.E.M. studio release. Info from the event can be found at the remdublin blog. Impressions of the new tracks have been mostly positive, with several fans already declaring the return of R.E.M.. Will it really happen? Only time will tell, the album will be finished sometime this fall. In the meantime check out some footage from the event, featuring the new song "Living Well's The Best Revenge"

  • Rock Star to have downloadable albums

Forget downloadable tracks, why not downloadable albums? Harmonix/MTV Games recently announced that full albums would be available for an undisclosed price when Rock Star launches later this year. So far The Who's: Who's Next and Nirvana's Nevermind are the only albums confirmed. The real question is how much will these downloadable albums cost? With the game rumored to retail around $200, how much more money can MTV suck out of us? Well, it's hard to say, but the thought of fake jamming to Territorial Pissings seems like an incentive to empty my bank account.

  • The Simpsons Movie Review

I'll keep this brief, mainly because a review of the new Simpsons movie should be pretty unnecessary. All you really need to know is that the Simpsons movie succeeds at satisfying both hardcore fans and casual fans alike. It's also packed with plenty of laughs, I think we laughed (the entire theater) non-stop for the first 25 minutes of the film. After all these years the Simpsons family are as poignant and funny as ever. Animated films often aim for an all ages audience, but can rarely pull it off. The Simpsons is filled with plenty of adult humor (PG-13 deserved), but thankfully no real "message" to speak of. It makes the film a real crowd pleaser, and judging by the audience applause after the film was over, I think it's obvious to say that the creators nailed this one. It's was a long time coming, but it was worth the wait.

    8.5/10.0

  • Weekend Box Office 07/27-29/07 - The Simpsons make lots of D'oh (too easy)

Releasing a Simpsons movie after being on the air for 18 years seemed risky, but apparently, America still loves the Simpsons, as it scored the 5th biggest opening of 07 this weekend. Besting even Pixar/Disney's latest Ratatouille, I guess hand drawn animation isn't completely dead. The film attracted all age groups, and with positive word of mouth, it looks like it could be one of the most successful films of the summer. I guess all that crazy Fox marketing worked.

The other films that opened this week didn't fair as well. No Reservations scored a below average showing in 5th place. It might have something to do with the film looking extremely snobby and shallow. I Know Who Killed Me didn't get any help from Ms. Lohan's recent 24 hour news coverage. I guess not all publicity is good publicity. Who's your Caddy opened up in 10th, and will be in your local Best Buy within a few weeks.

    1. The Simpsons Movie $ 71.9 Million NEW
    2. I Now Pronounce You... $ 19 Million $ 71.7 Million
    3. Harry Potter and... $ 17.1 Million $ 241.8 Million
    4. Hairspray $ 15.6 Million $ 59.3 Million
    5. No Reservations $ 11.8 Million NEW
    6. Transformers $ 11.5 Million $ 284.6 Million
    7. Ratatouille $ 7.2 Million $ 179.7 Million
    8. Live Free or Die Hard $ 5.4 Million $ 125.1 Million
    9. I Know Who Killed Me $ 3.4 Million NEW

  • Rumor: Xbox 360 gets $50 cheaper on August 8th

According to the Hollywood Reporter (what?), the Xbox 360 will be given a $50 price cut within a few weeks. Seems strange to cut the price right before Halo 3 launches in September, but maybe that's the point. With a huge amount of 1st party exclusives, and tons of 3rd party support. The 360 is looking like a smarter and smarter investment everyday. Now if only we could get Team Ico to make an Xbox game. Wait..that won't happen. Sony please drop your price....again.

  • Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay revealed, bank accounts shiver.

WOW. If you haven't done so already, take a few minutes to experience the true beauty of MGS4. The 15 minute gameplay demo can be found HERE

Forget the console wars between the 3 systems, in my eyes the war is on my wallet. Which next-gen system will win my money, the 360 or the PS3? Well, I'm still undecided (this is an important decision, one of the most important in a young man's life) but that demo and Sony's last E3 conference has given my bank account the willies. My dollar bills won't even talk to me at the moment. Here's hoping another price drop occurs before this baby debuts next year.

PS - don't listen to Duke, this one is not coming to 360. Snake even uses a PS3 controller "in-game" to control his new mini-mech toy. I just can't see him using a giant white controller with a glowing X on it in the battlefield. This is a stealth game afterall.

  • This Week In Music 07/24/07

3 POSTS IN ONE DAY!! MY FINGERS ARE BLEEDING

Not much this week, but I'll do my best...

    UNKLE - WAR STORIES

What makes Unkle so unique in the world of techno-rock, is that they actually try to rock with lyrics. Back in the mid-90s this was almost unheard of, now it's pretty much commonplace. War Stories is probably the best Unkle record ever, but it still sounds like it could have been released 10 years ago. Which makes it fun for the sake of nostalgia, but when you have a new wave of electronic artists like Caribou breaking the mold, it's hard to stay interested. That's not to say it isn't enjoyable on some level, there is something about that early guitar heavy industrial sound I still love. The other plus is that there are several different vocalists including James Levelle himself, it gives you an optimistic feeling with each new track. It's just too bad that instrumental tracks are usually the strongest.

    6.8/10

    Awful releases of the week:

(disclaimer: I haven't actually heard these releases, but based on common sense, I have a good feeling they will be awful)

Hanson - The Walk: Who is paying these kids? and why?

Silverchair - Young Modern: This has actually been getting favorable reviews, but I don't think I could ever live with myself knowing I'm listening to Silverchair. I'm sure just like the debut, they are a "me-too" band. I used to sound like Eddie Cheddar, but now we sound like The Shins. The AMG description even says "post-grunge" YUCK.

    That's it for this week.

    -SAUER.

  • Dear Reader(s?)

So apparently people read this site. No, I'm not kidding. In the last week, I've had a few myspace comments telling me so. Meanwhile Duke has had strange encounters with people at bars (I didn't ask if they were gay bars, sorry) asking for updates. So, with two people actually reading, I have decided to step it up a notch. The truth is that I never hear from any of you. SO PLEASE COMMENT!!. Trust me hitting that "post" button won't give your computer rabies, or cause you to get mass email spams from my new penis de-enlargement pills. So don't be scared to express your opinion!! Even if its just "Hi".

So to all the reader(s). I say keep readin-on

    I love you all

Gay stereotypes spit all over teenage wizards and cross-dressing Scientologists this past weekend. As Chuck and Larry claimed the top spot at the box office. I understand the fanbase, and America's ability to laugh at gay people, but I was expecting a little more Potter love. I guess all those Potter kids are sitting at home reading the last book in the series instead. Doesn't seem like that great of a marketing move. Next time spread the love a little. Oh wait, there won't be a next time. That doesn't seem too smart either. I'm sure Potter's kids will be back in a few years with a CG best friend named Mog-Mog or something. Fans are sure to burn Rowlings house down.

The rest of the top 10 were filled with the usual 2 hour GM commercial, a PG-13 action movie (why?), a movie starring Robin Williams as a priest (again, why?) and some movie about Noah's Ark that supposed to be funny. Yeah everyone dies in a flood, hilarious!!

Next week we have the best movie title of the year "I Know Who Killed Me" starring some rehab retard, and a Simpsons movie that is about 15 years late. Should be fun.

  • Quick Reviews: Xbox Live Arcade Games Wrap up

No I’m not dead and yes I’m still gaming.  Life’s been hectic at the Duke household, so I haven’t had time to really dive into full fledged games. Thankfully, Xbox Live arcade has a bunch of pick up and play games that I’ve been dabbling in.  Here’s what I’ve been playing lately.

     Aegis Wing

Aegis Wing – Every single Xbox 360 owner should have this game. It’s a free download and quite a bit of fun. Aegis Wing is an basic old school, side scrolling shooter designed for multi-player (both online and offline) and there are tons of people playing at any time, so getting into a 4 player match is a snap.  There is a single firing button and you can collect 4 different special weapons (Guided Missiles, Laser Beams, EMP Bombs and Shields). Each ship can attach one another and become a gun turret capable of firing 360 degrees.  Each time a player attaches to another player, the special weapons become more powerful. When all four are attached, the special weapons are enormous and take up almost the entire screen.  It’s an easy decision; Download this game and have fun. You’ll be able to beat the game in less than 30 minutes, and you’ll come back time and again.

10/10 It’s Free and fun; that sounds perfect to me. If we were paying for it: 6/10

    Boom Boom Rocket

Boom Boom Rocket – I was very excited when I heard about this game. It’s a rhythm from the creators of Geometry Wars (which is thankfully coming soon to Wii and DS!) in which you set off various super colorful fireworks in timing to classical music.  The problem is the difficulty of the game. It’s far too easy on the easy mode, even for novices. Then the Medium mode comes in and kicks your ass if you’re not an experienced player and forget about hard mode unless you’re a glutton for punishment. There is a typical face off type multi player mode, an Endurance mode which endlessly loops the song and gets faster and faster and a Kid mode which you can just slam on any button you desire to set off the fireworks.  Unfortunately, there’s just not enough variety here (Only ten songs total) to warrant a purchase.  Download the demo and play through the 3 songs they include. That should be enough.

4/10 Very Pretty, but very shallow as well. It’s certainly not worth the 800 Microsoft Points (Aka $10)

    Catan

Catan – This game just baffles me. It’s a simple board game with almost no graphics but it’s one of my favorite games on Xbox Live.  The game begins with 19 Hexagon shaped pieces randomly placed on the board. These pieces can be Wood, Brick, Wheat, Wool or Ore. Then a numerical value from 2-12 is assigned to each of the pieces.  Players then take turns placing two settlements on the corner of a Hexagon and a road leading from that settlement.  Each house must be two spaces from any other house, and must be connected to another settlement via roads.  Players then roll the dice and any settlements touching a piece with that number then get the resource.  After the roll, the players turn starts. Catan is just as much about trading with other players as it is about the luck of the roll.  In fact, it’s nearly impossible to win a game without some clever trading of resources.  It’s one of those easy to learn, difficult to master games that will keep you coming back again and again.  Single player games take about 20-30 minutes and Live games take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple hours, depending on how experienced the other players are.  Download the demo and play a couple games.  It should hook you.  The only downside of this game is the lack of offline multiplayer.  I’m not sure how they’d pull that off, but it would have been nice.

8/10 It’s just plain fun and it’s nice to have a huge community ready to play any time you want. Plus, cleanup is a breeze and you’ll never lose any pieces. Worth every one of my 800 Microsoft Points.

     Carcassonne

Carcassonne – My current favorite Live Arcade game.  Carcassonne is another board game, but this one only involves tiles.  It is a very simple game to play, and there is a beautiful balance to that. It’s simple enough for a child, but there is enough strategy to satisfy even an expert chess player.  The game is played by simply placing one of 72 tiles at a time on a grid board and matching up the edges.  This will create roads and cities which must be completely enclosed before points are awarded.  Once the roads and cities are completed, the points are doled out to whoever has placed a settler on the structure.  The larger the city or the longer the road, the more points are awarded.  Only one settler can be placed on any road or city, but multiple cities or roads can be connected, thus enabling the crafty player to place a city piece or road piece just off to the side of an almost completed structure, then attach them and share the points.  It’s impossible to illegally place a piece on the board, so you can’t really mess up.  The game is over after all 72 tiles are place on the board.  Then unfinished cities, roads and monasteries as well as farms are tallied up and the remaining points are doled out.  The game takes about 10-20 minutes to play and it’s one of those games that will be different each time you play.  Online and offline multi-player are available as well as the free Rivers expansion pack.

9/10 Tons of fun and easy for anyone to pick up and play. Enough strategy to keep hardcore players coming back over and over. I’d gladly pay the 800 points again and I’ll be buying the future expansion packs as soon as they are available.

     Pac Man

PAC-MAN Championship edition – If you think it’s just another PAC-MAN game, you’re very wrong.  It’s the first true evolution since Ms. PAC-MAN and it deserved a better name than Championship edition.  This PAC-MAN comes with a total of 5 different game modes, all of which are timed at either 5 or 10 minutes.  The thing that really sets this game apart from the original PAC-MAN and Ms. PAC-MAN is the ever changing board.  Rather than having the entire board filled with pellets, a pattern of pellets will be on each side of the board. Once you’ve consumed each pellet on one side of the board, a piece of fruit will appear on the opposite side of the board. When you eat that fruit, it sends a shock wave to the other side of the board which changes the shape of the board and places a new pattern of pellets.  This ever changing board along with increasing speed really makes the game feel fresh.  With a total of 5 different play modes, this is a must download for anyone who’s spent more than $10 in quarters on PAC-MAN or Ms. PAC-MAN through the years.  Just download the demo and you’ll see what I mean.

8.5/10 The only things keeping this from a perfect score are the lack of an unlimited time mode and the techno music which gets annoying very quickly.

That's it for now. I'll be back soon.

    Mahalo,

    Duke
