Dinosaur Jr - Beyond

Reunion albums are usually awful cash-ins, (please see the Janes Addiction or Stooges reunion albums for more details) but somehow Dinosaur Jr have pulled off a miracle with Beyond. Not only does the album compare to their earlier work, it also competes with their best work. Pretty amazing, considering the last few Dino Jr records and the latest J.Mascis and Lou Barlow solo records left much to be desired. Beyond easily falls within their top 3 records without much trouble.

Beyond works because it doesn't try to be anything different then a Dinosaur Jr record. There isn't a "modern-day" gimmick to be seen or heard. The sound quality is low, the lyrics simple, and the guitar riffs explosive. It brings quick teenage memories of jamming out in your bedroom or in your car with nothing but an air guitar and your life ahead of you. The deja vu feeling may leave some fans wanting more, but I think most will be quite happy reminiscing.

The album comes out at a perfect time too. When so-called "indie" rock has become nothing more then a big budget production filled with way too many band members each playing non-traditional instruments. You won't find any kazoos, organs, or glockenspiels on this record. Just the basics, a kick ass drummer, a kick ass bass player, and a kick ass guitar player. It's fitting considering Dinosaur Jr helped pave the way for so many of these new artists. It's nice to see the group sticking to what they do best instead of trying to appeal to the new generation of Modest Mouse fans.

If there is any fault in Beyond it's Barlow, who left Dino Jr. to write his own music (Sebadoh). Mascis and Barlow must have made some sort of agreement to reunite, He's given two songs on this record, both of which are lacking compared. Barlow just can't match Mascis' energy. On a positive note, Barlows' tracks add a nice diversity to the album.

So what makes a reunion album successful? Look no further then Beyond, which is so faithful to it's roots, that it doesn't sound or feel like a reunion album at all. Dinosaur Jr. may not have made a good record in over 10 years, but listening to Beyond makes you feel like it was just yesterday.

8.5/10.0 - Best reunion album of all time? Possibly.

This is exclusively for fans of Dinosaur Jr. For those of us that didn't get them the first time around, this won't pull you in. There's just nothing special about this album to me. It seems like i've heard all these songs before....in the mid 90s.

But then again, Dinosaur Jr brings back bad memories for me anyways, so i'm biased.

it's very true, this album will not make you like Dinosaur Jr., if you didn't like them to begin with. It's still got some of the best guitar work they've ever done, and is much more rocking record then half the stuff out there today. to the non-fan it might sound too familiar, but die-hards will realize the genius that Mascis is throwing down on this record.

PS - maybe if you had good memories of Dino Jr. this would be different. Those times were a lot of fun.

PPS - I find it funny that you complain that you've heard all these songs before, when your favorite Sirius station is the 90s rock station. Oh snap...Plus these guys were much more original then STP ever was... oh snap again.. ha ha.  Come on Duke I thought you were punk?

Yeah, but I haven't actually listened to the 90s station for a month or two, I'm actually almost constantly listening to Howard or the Comedy Channels.  And I'd take STP over Dinosaur JR any day.  I'd also rather listen to Sebadoh over Dinosaur JR any day.

Genius that Mascis throws down on this record? I think you may be overstating that a bit.  There's nothing genius about rehashing the same records you recorded 15+ years ago.

Take that Sauer.

one last point. Beyond may sound similar to their past records, but in all honesty their last few records weren't all that good. This record sounds like it actually belongs in their late-eighties hey day with classics like Bug, and You're Living All Over me. Wayyyy before those MTV days, most remember. It's rare for a band to make a reunion record that sounds as good as their best records, some over 20 years old. Most of Dino Jr.s Mid-90s work was pretty average compared. That is why Beyond stands out. These guys are rocking out like they are 18 again. cue George Burns

Please listen to track 3, Pick Me Up, and tell me that guitar riff is not genius. it may not evoke images of collapsing buildings or a butterfly in the rain like some bands you enjoy, but it sure does kick all kinds of ass. remember when rock music kicked ass?

ha ha.

PS - Sebadoh is about as generic as the phrase "90s alternative rock".

Dinosaur Jr were one of the first bands to play this kind of music, right up there with the Pixies and Sonic Youth. Your Living All Over Me came out in 1987!!! Show some respect to indie icons!!

Yup, quote from that link:

"As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs...Consequently, Dinosaur Jr.'s '90s albums -- when the group was essentially a front for Mascis -- don't sound particularly revolutionary, even with their subtle sonic innovations, yet their original '80s records for SST were a different matter."

Now that's genius. Let's make the same record 4 or 5 times and add a few new guitar riffs and solos.  Maybe they put out a good album or two in the late 80s, but that can't put them in the same class as the Pixies and Sonic Youth. Coming out at the same time doesn't mean they're in the same class.

I challenge you to a pillow fight.

did i not just say that the band's mid-90's work was a bit tedious? The point is that Beyond is edgier and more exciting then anything they have done in 20 years? it's comparable to their best records in the 80's and it's a Friggin reunion album!!! Which was the whole point of the review. They could have easily released a slow and boring record with electronics (see J.Mascis and The Fog) instead they came out swinging the gauntlet. Praise indie!!

The Pixies and Sonic Youth may have been more creative, but I don't think either of them can do what J.Mascis can do on a guitar, at least not in the same style. He was like Neil Young on speed.

I'm 100% sure their next record will suck. They haven't really made a good record since Siamese Dream. I liked Mellon Collie back in the day, but it doesn't hold up. I really liked Gish and Siamese Dream, so that's two good albums by my count.

That's two more albums than Dinosaur Jr will ever make.

Well played...

Raul, I understand you have bad memories, its okay. But just because you were born in the 80s and have a special place in your heart for horrible 90's alt doesn't mean you should be so bitter...

not quite, maybe you should listen to something else by them besides Losing My Religion. Your opinion is false until you've heard Murmur and some of their other early stuff.

I heard Michael Stipe and J. Mascis eat nothing but endangered species. Is that really a quality you like it your front-men? I think not. Save the Snow Owls.

And i'm totally stuck in the 90s. I still wear slap bracelets and listen to Candlebox every day.
