Hey guys, I'm not dead I promise. Just really busy. Not that there has been much to talk about. April was a pretty week month for new music and movies. Just look at that boring box office. Luckily the summer will officially begin this Friday with Spiderman 3 hitting theaters. So how much will it actually make? We shall see.

    10. Grindhouse$ 4.2 Million$ 19.7 Million

OUCH!!, Grindhouse is officially a box office bomb. With films like Wild Hogs beating it in it's 7th week of release!! This is very bad news for Tarantino fans and fans of indie cinema in general. I guess kids these days could give a shit about the pulp fiction director. They would rather see a Hitchcock rip-off with a direct-to-video title. Yes, Disturbia (worst movie title of the year?), did very well this weekend. Which is very good news for Shia LaBoeuf (call him Beowolf for short) who not only hosted SNL this weekend, but is starring in the upcoming Transformers, and was just annouced to star in Indy 4. Where the hell did this guy come from?

    9. TMNT$ 4.9 Million$ 46.7 Million
    10. Firehouse Dog$ 4 MillionNEW

Twas a sad Easter for film geeks everywhere, when a film as cool and unique as Grindhouse gets beaten by "Are We Done Yet?" you know something went wrong. So what exactly happened? Well Grindhouse did have a few things going against it. A running time of 3 hours, a R rating (which is deserved), and overall this just isn't a mass market movie. Still it irks me that horror remakes and Sixth Sense wannabe's still bring in the crowds. I guess it's nice to know that The Reaping made a little less. Both Blades and Meet the Robinsons held pretty well for the week.

  • Grindhouse

I've never sat in a theater and watched a "grindhouse" flick, but I have seen my share of awful B movies. The kind of films that are so bad the're good. Tarantino and Rodriguez tried to tackle the genre with their first double-feature (if you discount Dusk till Dawn.) How did they do?

The film opens with Rodriguez's Planet Terror, A action-packed Zombie flick with tons of blood splatters and bad lines.  Rodriguez knocks this one out of the park. Not only is it one of the most exciting zomibe films ever shot, it's filled with tons of great moments and pays tribute to some of the best zombie films from the 70s. The Zombies themselves are some of the grossest ever put on screen. The heroes are also some of the funniest. From Rose McGowan as the stripper who wants to be a "stand-up" comic until her leg gets torn off, to Freddy Rodriguez's surprise bad ass Wray. All the characters come together to make this one of most memorable and gory Zombie films in recent history, and is easily worth the price of admission alone.

Don't get up for the bathroom just yet. In between Planet Terror and Death Proof is one of Grindhouse's best parts. The fake trailers shown in between these films are all hilarious and should not be missed. Eli Roth's trailer in particular is a work of horror genius, with plenty of blood and bad taste to go around. Depending on the kind of person you are, you'll either be laughing hysterically or cringing in horror. Either way you'll be having fun.  I could easily watch an entire movie filled with these trailers, kind of like a Kentucky Fried Movie for horror geeks.

So after the explosive fun of Planet Terror and the quick pleasure of a few fake trailers, Tarantino comes in with Death Proof. Death Proof is a bit hard to review, because it will easily be a love it or hate it type of film. For one, it's very slow compared to the previous film. Which comes as a shock to the system after being through so much action. It's also filled with tons of vapid dialogue. Tarantino seems hellbent on actually making a bad movie, not an overly entertaining one. While this may be a bit disappointing, it's also very true to the genre. If you've seen these old films, you would know most of them were filled with tepid scenes with very little going on. The films had their moments which made them classic, it just took a little patience to reach that climax. The death scenes in Death Proof are all great (despite being very few and far between) , the car chase pretty amazing, the real question is was the payoff worth it? I'm not so sure. There were a few scenes where a fast forward button would have been really useful. At times Tarantino's film seems more of a tribute to himself then to the bad movies he watched growing up. His geek-ego is in full force.

So despite being a little disappointed in Tarantino's half, the overall package is still great, and can easily be recommended to fans of blood, boobs, and bad lines. Grindhouse is a film event that is filled with plenty of guilty pleasures, and that's what makes it such a success.

    Planet Terror - 9/10

    Trailers - 9/10

    Death Proof - 6/10

    Overall - 8/10

  • This Weeks Music, well sort of...

Well this album actually came out two weeks ago, but I've been slacking a bit. There hasn't been a decent music release in a few weeks anyway. So my pick goes to..

    Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha

The Birdman is back with another album of well-written adult pop music. Never mind that Bird's amazing voice has such range that it can be comparable to Yorke, Byrne, and Dylan all rolled into one. It's the songwriting that's the key to his success. The lyrics are just as quirky as they are endearing. Songs about playing Operation as a child, plane crashes, Mitosis, and Macedonian Kings are just a short glimpse of the variety on this record.  Bird's last effort, "Mysterious Production of Eggs", was my favorite album of 2005, and while Armchair has more then a few great moments, it never lives up to his last album. Not to worry, Mr. Bird has plenty of surprises this time around, including plenty of whistle-solos (no I'm not joking), piano work, violins, and a little xylophone for good measure. Despite the immense sound around him, Bird comes off as a modern day beat-poet. An absolute original, which seems to be lacking in so many singer-songwriters these days. If you haven't given Bird a chance, now would be a good time.

    8.5/10.0

    9. The Hills Have Eyes 2$3.9 Million$15.8 Million
    10. Reign Over Me$3.7 Million$13.3 Million

It's April!!! What better way to start the month with a little box office discussion? Blades of Glory opened very well this weekend, further proving the comedy staying power of Will Ferrell. Meet the Robinsons did OK for a kids flick, but rather poor for a Disney flick. With TMNT quick drop to 4th place, it's possible that CG-animated films just aren't the big money makers of old. I'm sure Shrek III will still do fine. WIld Hogs and 300 are the biggest movies of the year!! (so far) which is pretty interesting considering the audience these films attract. Next week the highly anticipated (by me) Grindhouse gets released. 3 hours of blood, boobs, and blowing stuff up. Sounds like a great time to me.
