Jeff Tweedy's Sunken Treasure is a must for Wilco fans.

Last year Wilco announced that they would be releasing a live DVD entitled "Kicking Television". I was pretty excited.  See, I've seen Wilco live more then any other band, and everytime I see them I love them even more. They are easily the best touring rock band around today. I will hear no disagreements. So imagine my disappointment when "Kicking Television" on DVD was cancelled, and moved only to a CD release. Thankfully, Tweedy has mended my broken heart with the release of "Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest". In just an hour and a half Tweedy, the heart and soul of Wilco, brings their big live sound into an intimate and emotional experience.

Tweedy's soft and earnest vocals are surrounded by quiet low lights and minimal set up. It's really just Jeff, his guitar, and one lucky audience. Throughout the five seperate performances, Tweedy plays Wilco classics like "War on War" and "Theologians" which sound reborn when played completely acoustic. He also plays great tracks from his various side projects like Loose Fur's "The Ruling Class" and covers like Woodie Guthrie's "California Stars". It all sounds great on DVD, while it may not be DTS surround, it's still crystal clear for a live recording with a very comforting sound. With 22 songs total, there is a good amount of material from Tweedy here. Tweedy's performance is never taken too seriously, with plenty of humor throughout his set. It's literally the first time I've seen Tweedy open up so much to his audience, he usually keeps pretty quiet when he plays with Wilco. Jeff's interaction with the crowd makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

If an excellent DVD isn't enough for you, Tweedy has given us another gift. Anyone who purchases the DVD can download all the songs plus two bonus tracks direct from the DVD-Rom. The Mp3s are in high bit-rate quality, and really make this package even more excellent and a great value. All 22 tracks fit rather nicely on a 80 minute disc, unfortunately the two bonus tracks won't fit. Being able to take this performance on the road with you, is just amazing. It's such an excellent recording that it even surpasses Wilco's current live album. You coudn't really ask for a better overall package.

The description "This generations Bob Dylan" may seem a bit cliche and unrealistic, considering he's still alive and producing great records. Still, Jeff Tweedy at least qualifies as one of the best, if not the best singer-songwriters of this generation, and it's never more apparent then on this amazing DVD.

9/10

For wilco fans 10/10 - go buy this NOW.
