  • One night in the party pit: The Hold Steady Live Review 11/26/06

    The Hold Steady Lives

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing The Hold Steady Live at the Social in Orlando Florida.

Two bands opened up for The Hold Steady. The first band was The Sugar Oaks.  It's been said that if you don't have anything nice to say...

They sucked. Hard. Like a low-rent bluegrass Hootie and the Blowfish, minus any sort of vocal talent.

The second opening band was The Big Sleep.  This band absolutely floored me and captivated the whole crowd.  The Big Sleep is a trio from Manhattan who play a sort of Post Rock with sparse vocals but an incredibly layered and lush sound. Equal parts early Sonic Youth and Mogwai, The Big Sleep put on an energetic set and hit the audience with a true wall of sound. I highly recommend checking this band out if they are ever in your area.

The Hold Steady took the stage just after midnight and played for nearly 90 minutes.  They opened with 2 songs from Boys and Girls in America, and then switched back and forth between older songs and new.  When all was said and done, they played 8 tracks from BAGIA and 7 songs from earlier albums.

It has been years since I’ve seen a band that had this much fun on stage. Literally all 5 of the members had a huge stage presence and interacted with the crowd. If the crowd wasn't singing loud enough, the bassist threw money into the crowd to pep them up.  The guitars would squeal into impromptu solos the louder the crowd got and the band took turns telling stories and anecdotes between songs.  The set concluded with an invitation for the crowd to hop up on stage and take the instruments, and a request from the band for help getting stoned after the show. I'm sure they had no problems there.

If it wasn't for the first band, this would have been a perfect show.  The Hold Steady was well rehearsed, precise and filled with energy and alcohol.  They have officially moved into my number 2 must see spot for Langerado in March 2007.

    The Sugar Oaks : 1/10

    The Big Sleep: 9.5/10

    The Hold Steady: 10/10

    Overall : 9/10

  • Can a Beatles tribute actually be good?

The Beatles have been scattered, smothered, and covered by so many artists, it's impossible to take count. To name a few, William Shatner, The Bee Gees, Sufjan Stevens, and DJ Danger Mouse. They may all have their own take on the Fab Four, but they do have one thing in common, they don't even come close to doing the original material justice. So when I heard that Sir George Martin and his son would be revisioning the Beatles for a Cirque de Soleil show, I wasn't too excited. Is it possible that a Beatles tribute could be good? Well, by some miracle Love actually is.

Love, is basically a giant mix tape of great Beatles songs. Taking heavily from the Beatles later catalog, the album mixes and mashes various songs from various recordings. It might sound like a mess on paper, but in practice it actually works. How? Well for one, the songs aren't dismantled completely. In fact, the producers were pretty tame when remixing these songs. Which might be a bit boring for those looking for a completely mindbending new experience. Tracks like "A Day in the Life" and "Hey Jude" aren't all that different from the originals. While other tracks like "Strawberry Fields" and "Mr Kite" feel even more intoxicating then before. Everything mixed in is actual Beatles material, no cheesy electro beats or "umph-umph" noises as I like to call them.  It also helps that all the tracks sound great, it makes the wait for a remastered 5.1 Beatles collection even harder.

In the end, because the producers didn't dissect the core of the Beatles songwork, the best part of the Beatles pop remains intact. Love may not be as revolutionary as it claims to be, but do we really need the Beatles to sound "modern"? The beauty of the Beatles, was that their music was ages ahead of it's generation as well as classic for it's time. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and the Beatles Love project proves it. These songs are great, no matter how you slice them.

     8.6/10.0

  • Is the Wii Dangerous?

So I was playing Zelda on wii last night, and in the middle of the heat of battle I swung and slammed my Wii-mote into the coffee table and almost knocked over a glass of red wine. While it may seem like a minor accident, reports around the country (or the internet) have showed several people having similar accidents. There is even an entire blog about the dangers of Wii-motes becoming guided missles on http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com/. Broken TVs and windows seem all to common, thanks to sweaty hands and faulty wrist straps.  It's true our living rooms were never meant to become bowling alleys or tennis courts, but is the Wii really dangerous? How soon till we hear about Wii related injuries? Hold onto those remotes people!

PS - In related news, Sauer officially has Zelda fever. This sickness consumes hours away from daily life, and causes a severe lack of sleep.  Be warned!!

Gobble, Gobble. it looks like quite a few people went to see movies this weekend. It's just unfortunate for the newcomers that moviegoers were still interested in last week's flicks. Happy Feet continued to dominate and the new Bond is close to becoming the most successful Bond film yet. The only newcomer that faired well was Deja Vu. The biggest upset was Tenacious D's Pick of Destiny, which depsite a rather large ad campaign failed to even crack the top 10. It looks like the Fountain and Bobby are destined to flop as well.

Next week, we get a Van Wilder sequel!!! Yeah.

Sauer is officially back from vacation. i want to thank Raul Duke for filling in while i was away. It's good to be back!!

  • Nintendo Wii: First Impressions

I've been able to put in about 4 hours with the Wii since it arrived Monday morning.  The quick verdict is the Wii lives up to lofty expectations.  There are definietly some minor issues with the controller sensitivity at times, but it's nothing that really distracts from the overall enjoyment. The initial system update also took far too long (Upwards of 30 minutes) but i'll attribute that to Nintendo Server overload. I was completely unable to find the Nunchuck controller for my additional Wii-motes, so all my multiplayer experiences were with Wii-Mote only. Now i'll give a very quick rundown of the games I was able to play yesterday. I will post full reviews once I get to put some more time into the games.

     Wii Sports

    Wii

This was the first game I threw in, and it's not that great as a single player experience.  Tennis is ok, but not controlling your character will cause some confusion as to which way to swing the controller (Forehand or backhand). Baseball is what everyone expects, simple batting, simple pitching and no fielding or baserunning.  Bowling is by far the best on the disk, especially in practice mode where you'll eventually try to bowl down 100 pins at a time.  Golf is suprisingly realistic in the control scheme and will probably not work well for non-golfers.  Boxing is alright, but it turns into a "who can shake the controllers faster" experience.

Wii Sports as a Multi Player experience is a completely different, and much better, experience.  Tennis instantly becomes tons of fun when playing doubles side by side.  Baseball is also boosted when one player is pitching to the other.  Bowling gets better the more people you have at the lanes. Golf is still golf, single player or no. I wasn't able to try Boxing due to lack of extra nunchuck.

    Madden 07

    Madden

I've only put in about 20 minutes with Madden as I only went through practice mode and a couple mini games. I can say with confidence that this is the best Madden to date and should prove entertaining to a much wider audience than any other football game to date.  The controls are simple and will come naturally to almost everyone. Passing is a bit easier, but the real improvements come in the Running game. Jukes are done with a quick shake of the nunchuck, stiff arms with a flick of the Wii-mote. Lack of a second nunchuck prevented me from playing this multiplayer.

    Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz

    Monkeyball

I have not played the single player game yet. I have tried about 10 of the 50 or so mini-games. I am dissapointed to say that i'm unimpressed thus far. Out of the games I've played, only about 2 made me want to play them again.  The control on some of the mini games is not explained well enough and seems broken at first. After a couple plays, the control schemes come, but more than half of the games I played didn't deserve a second shot.  I have to put more time into this as Monkey Ball was my favorite multi-player experience on the Gamecube. For now though, i'm a bit disappointed.

    Rayman Raving Rabbids

    rayman

This is an absolute MUST BUY game for anyone with a Nintendo Wii.  You will not laugh harder at a video game. Ever. I've only played through about 10 of the 70+ mini games, and 9 of them were Amazing! (The 10th was just a bit too hard for me. How do you throw a cow 60 feet?) If you own a Nintendo Wii, please do yourself a favor and at least rent Rayman.  I doubt i'll have more fun with a mult-player game this year.

That's all i've got for now.

  • Weekend Box Office

    1. Happy Feet $ 42.3 Million NEW
    2. Casino Royale $ 40.6 Million NEW
    3. Borat $ 14.4 Million $ 90.5 Million
    4. The Santa Clause 3:... $ 8.2 Million $ 51.6 Million
    5. Flushed Away $ 6.8 Million $ 48.8 Million
    6. Stranger than Fiction $ 6.6 Million $ 22.9 Million
    7. Babel $ 2.9 Million $ 12 Million
    8. Saw 3 $ 2.8 Million $ 74.8 Million
    9. The Departed $ 2.6 Million $ 113.9 Million
    10. After Dark's Horror... $ 2.5 Million NEW

A very close race at the top, but Sauer was right! Happy Feet takes the crown this week narrowly defeating Mr. Bond.  Borat is somehow still sticking around and is sure to top 100 million dollars. No One wanted to Go to Prison despite the massive marketing campaign. It also looks like the Departed will never leave the top 10!

  • Amazon.com to sell 1000 Xbox 360 Core systems for $100

     Xbox Core system

It looks like the rumors were true. On Thanksgiving day at 2:00 pm Eastern time, Amazon.com will be offering 1000 Core Xbox 360s for the lowest price ever: $100.

Even with adding on the Hard Drive ($100 retail) and a wireless controller ($40), this is an unbeatable deal. The only thing that will be missing is built in WiFi, but I think people can overlook that for the huge savings.

Good luck and get those F5 buttons ready!

  • PS3 Shootings already?

I was expecting the shootings to start on Launch day, but it looks like a couple people got a head start on the PS3 Launch day violence.

According to WKYT news in Kentucky, 4 people including one reporter for WKYT were shot with BB guns while sitting outside the Best Buy store waiting for their PS3.

This is probably not the last story like this we'll hear. Happy Camping!

  • Rumors: Microsoft to Buy Capcom? Guitar Hero to start sucking?

The rumor mill is churning today. According to the latest issue of EGM and various website, Microsoft is looking to buy Capcom in order to help out their Japanese sales figures.  This would obviously be a huge coup for Microsoft, acquiring exclusive rights to Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, MegaMan and more.

MTV has purchased developer Harmonix (Makers of Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2) for $175 Million. Look for a cheap Guitar Hero rip off (Red Octane still owns the Guitar Hero Name) loaded with our favorite MTV friendly rock.

  • Gamestop unable to fill PS3 pre-orders

Gamespot is reporting that Gamestop (confusing?) will not be able to live up to it's inital PS3 pre-orders. Deja Vu? This is exactly what happened last year with the 360 launch. I find it pretty amusing that despite extremely conservative launch pre-orders (average of 8 per store), Sony still failed to live up to it's promises. Meanwhile, Nintendo has over a million Wii's ready to go, and is already expecting to ship out more as soon as possible. I'll be quite surprised if Gamestop continues the pre-order program after another problem has occured. Thanks Sony!
